I'm not dealing with state secrets, so that that extra security layer is good enough for me and because it's a paid service, I know how they're making their money - and it ain't by selling me to the highest bidder. You can use whatever client you like (as long as it's encrypted), but have to set up an app-specific login. Speaking for myself, I like Fastmail for a workable compromise. But it's cumbersome when you use multiple devices. POP3 also is arguably more secure because most individuals would not be as attractive as a mail provider in terms of being hacking targets so keeping the mail on your own computer, with good data hygiene, might be better than keeping it on a provider's server. Although most people laugh at POP3 and consider it archaic, privacy-wise, secure POP3 arguably is still the best protocol. Speaking of POP3, there's something to be said for that much-maligned protocol because it removes the mail from the provider's server, removing that as a possible breach point. I also use MailWasher Pro to catch and report spam, which requires either IMAP or POP3. The thing is, I have too many blasted email accounts to check each one using the Web or its own app. For the best security, the Web or a dedicated app with 2FA that doesn't require SMS are the best ways to go. Any time you introduce a third-party app into the equation, you introduce its vulnerabilities, as well as whatever holes there might be in the provider's IMAP implementation. Security-wise, that's the best way to go. It is recommended you properly and thoroughly research any product or service you are interested in using.
